We live in a world where people never seem to be satisfied; we want the latest car, smartphone, tablet, fashion trends, a big home, etc. Although these things may be nice to have it doesn’t bring happiness. Happiness is not something that can be bought where only the rich may be able to buy it. Happiness is the feeling of contentment.
How does one become content in a world of discontent? Let’s take a look at some scriptures.
Hebrews 13:5- “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as he have: for He hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”
Paul is saying not to be covetous. Don’t look at what someone has that is better than what you have. Are you jealous because someone you know has the new iPad when you have last year’s model? There is always going to be someone who has more or less than you. If you look at the person who has more than what you have then you’ll become discontent. Don’t even compare yourself or your personality to someone else’s.
2. 1 Timothy 6:8- “And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.”
Take a look around you. Do you have more than food and clothing? Then you should be happy with what you have. Notice that a home or even a car is not even mentioned…just food and clothing. If you have only those two things you should be content.
3. Philippians 4:11- “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatever state I am, therewith to be content.”
Here is Paul, a great man, once working for the high priest and studying under one of the greatest scholars, Gamaliel. He went from that to living a life in chains and says “I have learned, in whatever state I am, therewith to be content.” Can you say the same?
True happiness does not come from what money can buy or from how many possessions we own. It comes from being thankful to God for what He has chosen to give us.
Don’t get stuck in a comparison trap or keep saying, “I’ll be happy when/if…..” Be happy now. Be content.
Our focus and goal is to prepare ourselves to leave this world behind and meet Jesus in the skies. If possessions equals happiness to you then they will hold you down here on earth. This world is not our home. Find true happiness in Jesus.
